Fun With Food: Lunch Ideas - Guest Post

Hi! I’m Grace, I’m a mum blogger who enjoys spending time getting creative and having fun with the food I make for my 2 boys. I blog over at Eats Amazing, and I am probably best known for the creative bento-style lunches that I make daily for my older son. One of the comments that I receive often when people see my son’s lunches is “how do you find time to make them?”, but actually, contrary to popular opinion, bento lunches really don’t have to be time-consuming works of art. There are lots of little things that you can do to add a bit of fun to a lunch box without spending hours in the kitchen, and I’m going to share a few of those tips with you in this post.

Cookie cutters
Most people will have a few cookie cutters lying around in a kitchen draw somewhere, and if you’re willing to invade the toy-box, maybe even some playdough cutters too (don’t forget to give them a good wash before use on food of course!). Use them to cut sandwiches into fun shapes, or use smaller cutters on fruit, vegetables, cheese or ham. In the garden themed lunch below I used cookie cutters to make flower sandwiches, mini cutters to make cucumber trees (with the addition of food picks for the trunks) and melon leaves. The leaves were made with plunger cutters, which work particularly well on melon. If you’re wondering what to do with the crusts that are left after cutting out shaped sandwiches – I whizz mine up to make breadcrumbs and then freeze them until I need them for a meal or recipe.

Fun with Food - The Very Hungry Caterpillar Themed Lunch

The Very Hungry Caterpillar is a classic story that is well loved by many families across the world, and it is still pulled from the bookshelf in our home from time to time too.

I decided to create a lunch inspired by this popular book as I'm a firm believer that making food fun encourages children to eat better/more. With smaller pieces separated into sections it can also be a lot quicker for little people to consume and therefore ideal for school when kids just want to get outside and play!

Family Festival Fun and a Bear Inspired Bento

I do love to create a little surprise for the Mini Mes to discover each day at school.
Something to look forward to and a nice reminder that I am thinking about them and their day even though I'm not there in person.

Such a small thing like making food fun can make such a big difference to a child - I do hope that my attempts put a smile on their faces every lunch time!
I certainly enjoy creating their meals and trying to come up with imaginative new ideas for them to explore.

Today's lunch is bear themed...

For the sandwich (ham) I used 3 different sized circular cutters to create a head, snout and ears.
The snout is made from cheese and I've added eyes and a nose of raisins.

The crisps are prawn flavour Pom-Bears
The dessert is a chocolate Barny bear sponge
I've added a cheese bear (made with a shaped cutter) and some raisins into a pot which Jamster will no doubt pretend are bear droppings and find hilarious!
I've added apple slices on bear food picks

I've also added a yogurt and orange juice in their lunch bags.

We met Barny bear at Lollibop over the summer and this themed lunch box was inspired by the great day out that we had as a family at the festival.

What inspires you when creating meals?

Bento Boxes - Puzzles and Pieces

Making food fun for the Mini Mes is something I love to do and it often encourages them eat more and try new things without kicking up a fuss! I've done complete themed lunches (which will be returning for Halloween and Christmas) but there are days when I just like to make mealtimes slightly more appealing with cutters and food picks. Opening their lunchboxes at school should be fun!

Puzzles and Pieces

Their lunches consist of sandwiches shaped with a jigsaw cutter
Cheese also shaped with a jigsaw cutter
Grapes on animal themed picks
Mini cookie pieces
Satsuma pieces
Noughts and Crosses crisps
(I also added in a yogurt and fruit juice)

Very little effort or expense is required to make food just a tiny bit more exciting.
It doesn't take many more minutes to create either.

What was in your child's lunch today?
