We recently returned from a family break in Kefalonia and although most of our holiday highlights involve sunsets on the beach and trips to some beautiful attractions, we certainly can't forget the amazing food we consumed. While in Fiskardo, a beautiful harbour village on the Northern tip of the island, we stopped off at a bakery and The Mr picked up a pastry. For the remainder of our week away he mentioned went on and on about how delicious it was, so I decided to recreate the same at home.

Fun Food For Your Kids' Party
Throwing the perfect party for your little tot can be a nightmare. Trying to please kids and their parents by striking the right balance between games, treats and snacks is notoriously tricky but don't worry – simply have a look at the list below for hints and tips on fun feasts for your little ones.

Finger foods
Along with the conventional bowls of crisps and mini sandwiches, add more wholesome snacks like pitta bread, hummus, cucumber, carrot sticks, sliced apples and peppers to the mix. With a few carefully selected homemade dips on offer, it won't just be the kids who can't resist getting stuck in!
Hot snacks
Besides sausage rolls, chicken nuggets and pizza slices it's hard to think of anything that children enjoy more than chips. Whether you opt for skinny French fries or something a bit more substantial like McCain delicious straight cut, low fat chips, the key is presentation.
Using a few coloured plastic cups as holders, wrap your chips in parchment paper for a little taste of bistro-style sophistication and you’re guaranteed to score points with the yummy mummies!
Biscuits
Whether you choose to serve these during the proceedings or pop them into party bags to hand out at the end, colourful iced biscuits are sure to capture the little ones imagination. Simply mix 100g unsalted butter, 100g caster sugar, one free-range egg, 275g of plain flour and one tsp of vanilla extract in a bowl, roll out the mixture with a rolling pin and cut biscuits out of the dough using cookie cutters.
Bake the shapes in the oven for 10 minutes and decorate with icing sugar.
Drinks
So you don't end up with a room full of toddlers bouncing off the walls, make sure to offer an array of fruit juices and fun smoothies rather than fizzy drinks. If you’re worried this won’t go down too well then strike a compromise by making some good old fashioned homemade lemonade by mixing one litre of sparkling water with four freshly juiced Sicilian lemons and 100g of sugar. You can even get the kids to help you if you want.

Cakes
Although it is traditional to have a sweet centrepiece, embrace the trend for fairy cakes and save yourself time and money. Simply make a tray of fairy cakes and decorate using coloured icing and a piping bag. Better yet, make a game of getting the guests to decorate their own cakes with sweets and tasty toppings – it’s a great way to keep everyone calm and occupied for at least a few minutes and the best bit is they can eat the end result!

Cheese and Tomato Whirls
With the Mini Mes heading back to school on Monday I thought I'd make some yummy savoury snacks that will go perfectly in their lunch boxes as a simple alternative to the usual sandwiches or rolls.
These take about 15 minutes to make then 20 minutes to cook and the recipe makes around 24.

Ingredients
14oz self raising flour
4oz butter, softened
100ml of milk
Tomato puree/tomato sauce/tinned tomatoes
Cheese, grated
- Preheat the oven to 180 degrees
- Combine the butter and flour in a bowl and gradually add the milk to form a soft, yet dry, dough.
- Roll into a large rectangle of around 1cm thickness
- Spread over the tomato, we used the Peter Rabbit Organics Garden Vegetables Sauce, leaving a small space around the edge to prevent any filling running out when it's rolled.
- Generously sprinkle over the cheese
- Roll over the dough to form a log shape and slice whirls of around 1cm thickness.
- Place the whirls onto a tray, leaving an inch or more between each one, and cook until browned for around 20 minutes
Scoff!
You can use puff pastry instead of dough if you wish and add other fillings too.
Tip: If you find cutting the roll difficult you can pop the dough in the fridge for around 30 minutes to firm slightly which will make slicing it easier.
