Mums and dads of the world – listen up! Blogs are a great way to share parenting experiences, offer advice and make new connections with like-minded people. Building your own little corner of the internet can boost self esteem, and help develop lasting friendships. Plus, having a hobby that takes you away from the everyday duties of parenthood can be a great way of bringing balance to a busy schedule.

With so many free blogging platforms out there, starting an online diary has never been easier and there are precious few overheads to think about. Our Autumn & Winter Kids Fashion Haul

The Mini Mes and Me Autumn Winter Haul Fashion

With the colder weather fast approaching I felt the need for a little retail therapy, not that an excuse is ever required for clothes shopping, to top up our autumn and winter wardrobes. I managed to find so

Preparing For A Special Day

Is it too early to mention the C word? Some of you may think it is but how nice would it be to have everything purchased and ready weeks in advance; it would be amazing! You could sit back and enjoy the festivities without worrying about forgotten gifts or getting a turkey last minute. I'm going to be super organised this year when it comes to buying perfect presents for family and friends and having all the food and drink we require ready for an unforgettable feast.

I'm also hoping that shopping early will save me money, which it most certainly can do when you know where to look.

A Mini Makeover - Savvy Shopping

I've always headed straight to the big department and DIY stores when it comes to home improvements, but I was recently set a challenge by Debt Free Direct to see how the homeware products from my local supermarket compare to the big brands when it comes to price and quality.

Although we are having a new bathroom fitted in late June, it has been looking a little dull of late (especially with the horrendous wallpaper which I'm desperate to get rid of) so a mini makeover was in order. After all, nobody likes guests visiting when rooms are rather uninviting!

I decided to swap the plain plastic hand wash bottle for a shiny Disco Ball Dispenser (£8) and Disco Ball Soap Dish (£5), adding my favourite Rockstar Lush soap in there too to provide some variety. The dispenser is fairly heavy weight and the lid is easy to unscrew to add your hand cleaning liquid

One small click, one big change!

The laptop has (unfortunately) become my best friend over the past few years. I watch movies with it, I eat with it and I probably see more of it than I do real people! It even joins me in bed at times much to the Mr's disapproval. Working from home this is probably the case for many others in today's tech crazy world! It always seems to be attached and I find it hard to pull myself away at times. However when I do get to escape for a moment I like to use the Ecobutton now so I know I'm at least doing my bit for the environment - it is an easy to use USB device that puts computers into a low energy mode to save electricity.

It also helps to reduce your energy bills which is perfect for those that use their laptops a lot; like me.

This has become a favourite for the Mini Mes recently which is not surprising as like me, they love cheese. They often request it for dinner and any leftovers are ideal for lunch boxes the following day. It's great for the Mr too to take to work for a carb energy kick.

Forest Links to Love Over the Centuries

Our woods and forests have long been steeped in vibrant folklore which has entwined romance and trees for centuries.

With the unmistakeable whiff of love in the woodland air, here’s Forestry Commission England’s guide to the myths, fairy tales and quirks that make woods and forests some of the most romantic places on earth.

Traditional tokens of love…
In many traditions, declarations of love were expressed through the exchange of love tokens. One example of this can be found in Wales, where it became popular to make a specially carved ‘love spoon’ for your beloved (although acceptance of a spoon did not necessarily lead to marriage).

Due to its dense straight grain and pale colour (free of blemishes), sycamore was the most commonly used wood for creating these spoons.

Acorn-ucopia of love
If you’d like to know if your relationship will stand the test of time, find two acorns (one for you and one for your partner), then drop your acorns into a bucket of water at the same time. If the acorns float towards each other, then your romance will go from strength to strength.

If they don’t, try again…

The Big Belly Oak in the Forestry Commission’s historic Savernake Forest, Wiltshire, is around 1,100 years old. It took root at around the time William the Conqueror defeated King Harold in 1066 and is known as the great-grandfather of Savernake.

Sowing the seeds of love

The winged seeds of the ash have long been used by people to find out what their future love life has in store. If winged seeds did not appear on the branches of an ash tree, the owner of the tree was thought to be unlucky in love. It was also believed that if a lady placed an ash leaf in her left shoe, she would be fortunate enough to meet her future spouse within minutes.

Alternatively, you could find your intended love by repeating the following verse:

‘Even-ash, even-ash, I pluck thee,

This night my own true love to see,

Neither in his bed nor in the bare,

But in the clothes he does every day wear.’

Core, I really fancy you!

It is said that if a person wants to entice another, they should sleep with an apple under their arm. If they can persuade the person to eat the apple the following day, the person will fall in love with them immediately.

If the sweaty apple approach doesn’t work, try buying them a cider or a refreshing apple juice instead. Apples are aphrodisiacs!

Will you snare a millionaire?

Ever wondered what job your future partner will be employed in? If so, the cherry tree can help. After eating cherries, count out your cherry stones while reciting the following poem (one stone per word - if you have more than eight stones, start the poem again):

‘Tinker, tailor, soldier, sailor, rich man, poor man, beggar man, thief’

The profession spoken on your last cherry stone will be your future spouse’s calling.

The Forestry Commission’s National Arboretum at Westonbirt, Gloucestershire, has a stunning cherry collection that is perfect for spring walks.

The secret of a fruitful marriage

The hazelnut is a symbol of fertility. A bag of nuts bestowed upon a bride will ensure a fruitful marriage. Hazelnuts can also be used for love spells. Assign the name of your passion to a nut and throw it in the fire whilst saying:

“A hazelnut I throw in the flame,

to this nut I give my sweetheart’s name,

If blazes the nut, so may thy passion grow,

For twas my nut that did so brightly glow.”

Eternal beauty elixir!

Hawthorn was thought to increase fertility and was often incorporated into weddings, especially those performed in the spring. It is also said that if a young woman wishes to remain beautiful forever, she should bathe in the dew of the hawthorn tree at dawn on Beltane (the first day of May) while chanting this rhyme:

“The fair maid, who on the first of May,

Goes to the fields at the break of day,

And bathes in the dew from the hawthorn tree,

Will ever strong and handsome be.”

Everybody hurts, sometimes

Unlike other trees with romantic links, the willow tree has a dark side! For although many cultures include the willow in their love stories, its weeping branches have often led it to be associated with the sadness that can come with love - from the broken heart of unrequited love to the loss of a loved one.

100% natural, calorie-free heartbreak remedy

Poplar buds can be carried in tiny red bags to help mend a broken heart. These buds should be kept as close to the heart as possible. They can also be placed under a pillow and slept on to the same effect.

Carved with love

Couples looking to immortalise their love have often carved their initials and a heart on the bark of a tree, thus creating an arborglyph. Historically, arborglyphs were considered to be a romantic form of artistic expression that would last many years.

Chantel Summerfield, an expert on arborglyphs, has studied such carvings by American WW1 soldiers in England and is currently investigating a site at Lyndhurst in the New Forest. Look out for the chance to buy your own personalised arborglyph from www.theforestryshop.com

The same applies when it comes to heating your home, it can be just as hard to know what settings to apply when you head out for the day, but an exciting new product is here to help:

Are You Sitting On A Festive Fortune?

According to a recent study around 70% of households have loose change laying around the home that could be put to good use and saved away, especially as Christmas approaches. This equals as much as £1.5 billion each year, just within the UK!

The study also uncovered that 66% of mums regularly save coins in a jar and around 50% of children do the same - it's definitely a good habit to have as it results in up to £95 of savings on average, annually.
The Mini Mes love popping their money into their piggy banks and planning what they can buy.

Coinstar is calling out to families to 'unleash the power of those pennies' by checking in pockets, down the sides of the sofa and even in your drawers to see how much you can save this December.

Grab yourself a pot, watch the pennies pile up and see what you can treat yourself to this year.

“You’d be surprised how much loose change you have lying around the house on dressing tables and down the back of the sofa! Popping your coins into a money jar is so easy and is a great way to get your kids into the saving habit too. They will LOVE collecting up their spare coppers and finding out how much they have managed to save, especially when they can turn their pocket money into goodies! Coinstar is a great way to find out how much you've managed to save!”

Sarah Willingham, money saving champion.

Have a quick rummage around and see how much you can find. You will probably be pleasantly surprised!
You don't even need to worry about counting the coins as Coinstar kiosks, there are over 1,900 outlets, will do that for you. You just pop your change in and let them do the work.

Tesco Clubcard Christmas Boost

Christmas is fast approaching and the Tesco Clubcard Boost is here - such great timing!

It's the opportunity to exchange every £5 of your clubcard vouchers for £10 of boost vouchers to spend in store or online.

I've got my eyes on a few goodies for the Mr, the Mini Mes and myself!

The Mini Mes and Me Tesco Clubcard Boost

  1. Jamster is after a Furby Boom for Christmas so boosting my clubcard vouchers to get one will definitely save some pennies. Tesco have a variety of styles available but the Sweet Waves version is his favourite.
  2. The Tesco Hudl tablet would make a great gift for the Mr, for both work and play, and it is seriously great value! With 16MB of memory and around 500,000 apps it will certainly keep him occupied.
  3. This cute pink Teksta is a lovely alternative to a real pet dog which should keep Minxy happy. It comes complete with ball and bone too.
  4. I fell in love with this camera as soon as I saw it - red is a fav colour of mine and with 42x zoom it's bound to take some amazing pictures. I'm in need of a decent one and Nikon is a fantastic brand.
  5. I grew up with Playmobil and the Mini Mes are just starting to enjoy it too - this pirate set looks like great fun for them, and I, to share.

You can find out how to boost your Tesco Clubcard vouchers here:

The Cost of Going Back to School

Kitting the kids out for school over the summer can be an expensive ordeal and quite often by half term things need replacing so you can find yourself forking out money yet again!

I'm lucky that so far nothing is broken, ripped or missing, and therefore I don't need to purchase new stationery or uniform, but some extra costs have popped up already since the beginning of the school year.

Minxy will soon be going swimming - she will need a swimming bag, new costume and cap to wear.
Jamster will soon be doing outdoor activities - he will need jogging bottoms to replace his shorts.
Minxy is playing the cello again and any damage could cost me up to £400, hopefully she will take good care of it as she normally does, although accidents do happen!
Jamster is getting more and more homework and could do with a tablet or laptop for his research.

Although we don't pay for education all of these little thing still add up and no doubt they will both have a growth spurt just after Christmas and school shoes plus plimsolls will need buying! I also have the cost of school trips and cake baking this Friday, which could be classed as optional, but I don't want the Mini Mes to miss out so it's just another expense that needs paying. There is a lot of pressure on parents to provide and although I don't personally struggle financially there are families that do.

BrightHouse surveyed over 3000 parents with children of Primary, Secondary and College age to see how much they spent on going back to school. You can view the interactive animation with all off the findings here:
http://www.brighthouse.co.uk/cost-of-back-to-school/.

As children get older it would appear that it generally costs more for them to go to school with the average spend on a primary aged child being £140, on a secondary aged child being £250 and a college aged child being £325.

How do you feel about the costs of going to school?

Top Tips - Starting Uni

This time next year Minxy and I will be visiting secondary schools and selecting which she will be attending. It's a big step, one that I've been really dreading as a mum, as it's the end of an era with her growing up into a young lady and becoming more independent.
Where did my baby go!?

It got me thinking even further into the future and the idea of her heading off to uni - what advice would I be able to provide when she does eventually leave home to begin a journey, by herself, in further education...

  • Learn how to cook and clean before you move out as mum and dad won't be around to clear up after you and make your meals. Living on fast food is expensive and unhealthy so definitely not the way forward. Try to ensure you know how to create a few dishes and take advantage of the freezer so there is always something available if you are short on time.

  • Try to live on a budget before you leave home so you are aware of how much you need each week, and keep a note of what you spend. You may be surprised by where your money goes but it's the best way to work out if and where you need to cut back. Your social life will have to come second to the essentials like bills unfortunately so make sure you can afford them!

  • When selecting your university be sure to visit a variety and when you have chosen your favourite ones return a few times if possible to get a proper feel for it. You will be there for several years so you need to be certain that it's right for you. The same applies to the accommodation - you need to make sure it is suitable and that you will be happy living there. Take someone close with you for their opinions and try to speak to other students and visit the local area too.

  • Get some info on student bank accounts and see how you you can make the most out of student life with great discounts and even a fee free overdraft. Every little helps. You will need an account before you receive your student loan so make sure you open one as soon as you have your place confirmed at university. It may be worth getting a part time job so investigate what is available in the area before you move as other students will be seeking work also.

  • Think about transport. If you are taking a car where will it be kept, will there be parking fees and will you be risk becoming everyone's taxi! Look into buses and train routes and see if you can receive reduced passes. Also try to work out when you will be going home and how you will be getting there and back - you need to make sure you will be able to move everything you need.

  • Think about what you will need and stick to it. Some universities supply items that will be required so investigate before purchasing things like bedding, bins and ironing boards. Also check what is and isn't allowed - some items are not permitted!

  • It's natural to be apprehensive, and feelings of joy combined with worry are normal. Just remember to reach out to family and friends if you need a helping hand with moving, finances or anything at all as that's what they are there for. Seek support if you need it, never be afraid to ask. Most importantly enjoy yourself!

What tips do you have for someone starting university?

Perfect Pizzas

Although the odd takeaway is nice they can be quite expensive, but a decent dough is essential to create your own pizza at home. This one I've made many times and it's quick and simple.
A friend of mine saw a picture I'd added to Facebook of it last week and was keen to know the recipe - so I thought I'd share it on here for all!

Ingredients
(Makes 2 adult and 2 children's sized pizzas)

2tsp/one 7g sachet of yeast
1 tsp caster sugar
370ml warm water
600g plain flour
65ml olive oil
1 tsp salt

Method
  • Mix the water, yeast and sugar together in a bowl and set to the side for approx 5 minutes
  • Pour the mixture into the flour, oil and salt (in another bowl) and mix until it forms a soft dough
  • Knead for five to ten minutes until smooth and elastic in texture
  • Place back into the bowl, cover and leave in a warm location to rise for 30 minutes
  • Remove the dough, split into 4 balls, roll out and add your toppings
  • Bake for around 10 minutes until golden at 180 degrees
  • Scoff!

Meal Planning and Motivational Monday

The last full week of the summer holiday begins, how did that happen ?!
At the same time as looking forward to some return of routine when the Mini Mes go back to school next Thursday I will miss them. Perhaps not the arguing and sulking but I'll miss everything else.
I'll try to think of some wonderful lunch box ideas to make dining in the hall a little more exciting for them in the meantime!

We have just purchased a new car, a beautiful Insignia, so although we are far from penny pinching we are just keeping a closer eye on funds this week and have therefore gone for a low cost plan....

This weeks menu
Battered fish, new potatoes and vegetables
Jacket potatoes with a variety of fillings
Cheese and ham kievs, mash potatoes and vegetables
Tomato, sausage and pepperoni pasta bake with salad

My weight loss motivation for the week is...

Have a great week!
