Income Protection Insurance - What Is It and Do I Need It?

In the current climate, it’s fair to say that we are all so grateful for our income. The last year or so has been really tough on so many people financially, and we’ve all realised the importance of a roof over our heads and food in the cupboards.

With that in mind, why are so many of us unprotected when it comes to life insurance? And particularly income protection insurance? It makes total sense to insure your income, so that if you are unable to work due to injury or illness, you can continue to keep the bills paid and the family warm and fed.

About income protection insurance

Income protection insurance sits under the umbrella of life insurance. When you take out an income protection policy, you pay monthly to your provider to allow you to claim if you were to become too ill or injured to go to work for a prolonged period of time. Claiming on an income protection policy provides you with a percentage of your salary (usually between 50-70%) and enables you to continue meeting your financial responsibilities.

Income protection insurance is different to your standard life insurance policy as it is designed to pay out whilst you’re still around, rather than upon death. It also differs in that it pays out in regular, manageable chunks as opposed to one large lump sum.

Five tips for returning to work after maternity leave

Handing over a child and returning to work is one of the most difficult moments a mother will experience, even if it is only for a few hours. Spending time without your little one is one thing, returning to work is another – and it can be just as traumatic. Here are five tips to smooth the process.

Money
This guide from Money Advice Service tells you your rights with regards to maternity pay and leave.

If you’re returning to the same role you have the right to the same terms and conditions as when you left, and if your role has disappeared you should be offered a suitable alternative or redundancy pay.

How to get a job without relevant experience

It’s the chicken and egg scenario – you haven’t got the experience to snare the job you want from a site such as jobstoday.co.uk, but without snaring the job you won’t get the experience. For the young jobseeker it might seem like an intractable problem, but help is at hand: here are several ways to bridge the gap.

Get the qualifications
Face facts: you will not get a job as a lawyer, secretary, doctor, or many other jobs without the basic skills. Working to get the correct paperwork will show that you are taking things seriously. And don’t assume that you have to wait until the conclusion of your studies to apply for experience!

Reasons to be happy

You're not from round here

My reasons to be happy

Half term is almost here random butt shuffle dance across the lounge which means a week off school and a week off work too. We have tickets to the Gruffalo's Child and lots of baking and craft activities on the agenda although to be honest I'm just looking forward to a lay in each morning and spending time with the Mini Mes!

We have our bedroom being decorated finally so it is going to be looking very beautiful, very soon. New carpet is being fitted on Saturday and I have this lush new bed arriving the following week...

... yes it has a tv in it! I absolutely love it and have many times walked past the bed shop drooling at the site of it. We have a new memory mattress to go with it too. Comfort here we come!!

My mum is my third reason to be happy this week. She plods along through life doing so much for others and she is very loving and kind. I've actually done a random act of kindness today and sent her some flowers to ensure she knows I love her.

Meal Planning Monday

We are completely back to normality this week with the return of school and work, unfortunately *sigh*. Although the routine is appreciated I'll miss the lazy mornings and trip out with the Mini Mes but we have had a lovely break - Bring on half term!

This weeks planner...

Toad in the hole
Lasagne
Lamb stew and dumplings
Pizza, salad and garlic bread
Salmon and gnocchi bake

At the weekend we will be heading out for some family fun but as I'm trying to lose some weight there will be no take-away or eating out on the agenda.

What's on your menu?

I'm linking this over with At Home With Mrs M.

My reasons to be happy

Only 4 more days, after today, of work and school until we break up for Christmas! Definitely something to be cheerful about. I love duvet days, crafts and baking and not having to rush in the morning to get up and out into the cold will be lovely.

I've started wrapping gifts and purchased the last few bits yesterday evening so I feel quite prepared now for the big day. No doubt I'll end up buying more but that is always the way with me... Oops.

I'm hosting a Mexican night on Saturday with all the family round which I'm looking forward to. As it's at mine it will be a great evening without the need to taxi people about. I may enjoy a tipple or ten.

The Mini Mes have their award presentations tomorrow for their achievements over the year. Proud mummy moment alert!

My week that was... 1st-7th July

Sunday
After a lovely lay in I collected the kids from their dad's house and we went to see Ice Age 4, what a fab movie! Afterwards we met up with my parents in town for some lunch and we enjoyed a lovely homemade ham and chicken pie for dinner.

Monday and Tuesday
Not alot happend today really! The usual school and work routine and an evening indoors due to the rain.

Wednesday
I was feeling rather bleughh today, as were the kids when they got up for school, so we ended up having a duvet day with some movies. There seem to be a few bugs about at the moment so I didn't want to risk them being poorly at school. Plus with it being art week it wasn't as though they were missing out on anything particularly educating today. Well that's what I thought anyway. Better safe than sorry!

Thursday
The weather today made a bit of a turnaround and there was actually some sunshine to be seen yay! In the morning before work I enjoyed a lovely panini and cake with my aunt in a local cafe called The Hideout and after school the Mini Mes and I popped to Co-op for ice creams. The Mini Mes had induction day at school and were pleased with their new teachers. Jamster has the same lovely one from year one and Minxy has a pleasant male teacher. After dinner we all went out for an hour walk with Spartan in the fields.

Friday
Some friends of the family got married today and we were invited to the evening party to celebrate. However we ended up staying in and having an early night as both of the Mini Mes were feeling a bit rough again. Boo hoo!

Saturday
The Mini Mes headed off to see their dad at 10am so the Mr and I made the most of some child free time. We ended up going to see Spiderman at the cinema and having a curry in the evening at a lovely restaurant.
