Minimise Me - Weight Loss Weekly #3

I was left feeling a little disappointed after last Monday's weigh in, where my weight reduced a tiny bit but not enough to register as a pound, so I decided to try a lot harder.

Lesson learnt; Popping to the pub needs to be avoided at all costs!!

I've been eating so much healthier and my Coca-Cola cravings seem to have stopped. I can't hear the fridge calling me to raid it like Pac-Man anymore which really helps too. Some days I've even gone to bed a few hundred calories under my daily allowance which for me, is incredible and I'm so pleased with my progress.

Again this week I've been drinking more water, eating more fruit and veg and trying to get more sleep. My goal for the week ahead is to get three hour long sessions of exercise in, which is easily doable. I'm scheduling these in for Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday and I will take some pics of my Polar monitor to share the calories burnt and time completed.

Minimise Me - Weight Loss Weekly #2

I kick-started the year with a 3 pound loss last Monday which I was pleased about and now I'm onto week 2 of Minimise Me. I have to admit that I've found this week a bit harder and I've been so tempted to eat lots of naughty treats that are lurking in the cupboards leftover since Christmas. The fact I cooked a batch of warm, gooey brownies for the Mini Mes didn't help either. I could almost hear them calling me from the fridge to be consumed!

Minimise Me - Weight Loss Weekly #1

One of my goals for this year, probably the biggest and most important, is to lose weight and eat healthier. I'm increasing my exercise too and I want to get fit. Running a bath is hard enough work these days never mind a marathon, and far too many cheeseburgers and chocolates fall into my face which I really need to change.

So, I'm calorie counting each day, using My Fitness Pal to log my progress and I will be weighing myself each Monday. I've begun and given up so many times before but as the Mr and I have already booked three holidays for the year (woohoo) and I want to feel confident in summer fashion I feel as though I'm in right mindset to do this. I began 5th January.

The Flu Vaccine - Protecting Your Children This Winter

The bugs are back in town. That's right; it's that time of year again when the tissues come out and the coughs creep back in. Flu can develop quickly and leave us feeling quite unwell indeed. With many of us not wanting to miss work or school and definitely not wanting to be poorly over the magical festive period in particular, it might be worth booking your family in for a flu vaccine today.

Facts about flu

  • In an average flu season in England, flu affects up to 10% of children aged 0 – 14 years
  • Children are the main transmitters of flu and pass the virus on for longer than adults. For every 10 children who missed school because of flu-associated illness, eight household members subsequently became ill

Game on for kids in sport

Children spend far too much time in front of computer screens and games consoles. It’s been in all the papers, so it must be true.

But what is a lesser-documented fact, is that there are also millions of kids who are happy to kick technology into touch and get active – while the former group is being encouraged constantly to try their hand at one sport variant or another.

Ensure You're In Safe Hands: Keeping Healthy This Winter

It’s important, as the cold weather quickly draws in, that you take precautions to ensure you and your family stay healthy. As fuel bills rise and we try to resist switching the heating on, you should be looking at ways to stay healthy over the cooler months until spring rolls around again.

Winter is a time of year when we are more prone to getting sick and suffering with flu like symptoms. Children and older people are much more vulnerable to illness over this period, so make sure you take the first step to staying healthy by protecting yourself from their symptoms.

Innocent Alphabet Champions - X is for...

I'm a big fan of innocent as a brand. Not only are their smoothies and veg pots really delicious and convenient when on the go, but they make sneaking in a couple of those well needed 5 a day a doddle, especially when it comes to the kids! They use plenty of fruit in their drinks so they are bursting with flavour and they even make tubes which are 100% puree and juice that are ideal for lunch boxes. I couldn't really ask for more, especially with them currently being half price in many supermarkets too. We certainly took advantage of the offer recently.

Keep bugs at bay, the Vosene way

With the children back at school and others starting for the first time, it's quite likely that at some point soon your little ones will return home with unwanted visitors. Head lice.

Unfortunately as many as 63% of parents, with children aged 4-11 years of age, have said in a survey that their children have had head lice. Prevention is certainly better, and easier than cure, and Vosene's repellent products are here to help!

Lice go for clean or dirty hair, long or short, so if heads touch (they can't fly/jump) it is possible they will be transferred but you can certainly do your bit to try and prevent them. Vosene Kids shampoo and conditioning spray help to defend against head lice and leave hair clean and fresh with each use.

5 Dangers You Might Be Exposing Your Family To And Not Know It

Everyone wants to look after their families. There are many dangers though, that you might not even be aware of, and these may cause damage to your family’s long-term health. Here are five of these dangers to look out for:

1. Noise can damage your ears
Most people should be aware that exposure to loud noise at an early age can damage your ears. This is not an old wife’s tale. If your children enjoy loud music, or you constantly wander around the house with your iPod playing in your ears at full blast you could be setting a dangerous example to your family. Hearing deteriorates over time, and you may find that your family members will have to attend a Hidden Hearing clinic for a hearing aid at some stage in their future. It’s far better to explain how the ear can be damaged by excessive noise and let your kids appreciate the importance of their ears.

Discovering the Best Super Foods for Your Pet and You

Many people have favourite pet food brands and they will argue that their choice is the best. The discussion about which pet foods are healthiest can be as detailed as what the best fence for dogs is and whether the pet stop invisible fence is at the top of the list. It sounds silly to non-pet people, but those of us who believe our pets are family members are passionate about finding the safest, healthiest products for them.

While the proper containment for your pet is definitely important, even more so is what you feed them. Even buying pet food that is labelled organic or natural may not be the best choice, as government regulations are not that strict about what can be in pet foods that are labelled organic. The only way to be sure your pet is getting the safe, healthy food they deserve is to make it yourself. With the following list of super foods, it will be a snap for you!

Healthy Snacks and Treats for a Rapid After School Energy Boost - Guest Post

Oh No it’s nearly upon us “Dare I say it” the school summer holidays will be over and the kids have to go back to working hard all day long, while us parents think of unique and amazing ways to keep their energy levels up. I am going to miss my boys that is for sure, but I know they both have a common trait when they come barging back into the house after school. My Kids both instantly head towards the kitchen cupboards looking for a quick fix of treats and snacks to re-energise their weary heads after a long day at school.

Knowing that a lot of the treats and snacks that they both tend to enjoy are usually unhealthy and full of sugar, which has them bouncing of the walls and means they have to work a little harder to

Girls And Education: Why Education For Girls Is So Important

We all know that education is one of the most important factors in improving the life chances of children. But for many around the world access to education is limited or non-existent, and often this is based on factors such as family wealth, whether they live in urban or rural areas, their ethnicity and their gender.

Sadly, when it comes to girls and education the statistics are worrying to say the least. Worldwide 1 in 5 girls are denied an education. In Africa as a whole about 43% of girls are in lower secondary education, and in certain countries and regions these numbers are much worse.

What many people don’t realise is that educating girls has an enormous impact on more than the individual. If a girl is educated, even just to primary school level, it has stunning implications for their

4 Superhero Foods For You And Your Family To Enjoy This Winter

Winter doesn’t need to be an unhealthy time for you and your family or treated as an excuse to eat fatty, stodgy foods that more often than not make you feel tired and bloated. Take inspiration from these 4 winter foods that will heat everyone up and fill your family with the nutrients they tend to lack in these dark and cold winter days.

Hearty Soup

Soups aren’t just a good way to heat up on a cold winter day (albeit, that’s one good reason for eating it), they are also great for helping to control you and your family’s weight throughout the winters and boost immune systems in these harsh months.

Be careful of which type of soup you go for as canned soups might be cheap and easy but can be high in salt and low in vitamins. Instead, think about introducing your family’s five a day in a hearty, winter soup filled with vegetables like carrots to fight off infections or perhaps a homemade tomato soup, which acts as a great anti-oxidant and is a much loved family favourite throughout the UK.

Hearty winter soups are great to take to work (and they can help you stay healthy during cold and flu season at the office). They’re also very convenient to have simply as a light dinner in the evening.

Oatmeal

Start your family’s day right with a simple and well-balanced breakfast like a warm bowl of oatmeal in the morning...

...Ok so it might look a little uninspiring to begin with but consider blending it together with fresh fruit for a nutritious smoothie or cooked with warm, low-fat milk and a sprinkle of cinnamon to spice it up.

Oatmeal is a cheap and easy way to make sure your family stays healthy, lowering cholesterol and weight and ensuring that everyone gets a source of iron, magnesium and B vitamins in their first meal of the day.

Potatoes

Potatoes often get a bad reputation for falling under that unhealthy white starch category alongside tummy filling foods such as white rice. In fact they are a whole food that contains several beneficial nutrients.

Something you might not know about potatoes is that they’re great for your immune system – warning off those nasty winter colds and flu. Potatoes contain high levels of vitamin C, giving you 25% of your daily intake.

They also count as a good source of folate – perfect for women who are pregnant as this essential nutrient is said to play an important part in the development of the spinal cord and brain.

Winter squash

Winter squash such as butternut and pumpkin are often foods that you might not consider including in your weekly shopping list but they are fantastic winter foods and can be a tasty ingredient to use for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

You often find that in winter, people are more inclined to eating fatty foods as a source of comfort from the gusty winds outside but have you ever considered making your favourite winter warmers with something like a winter squash?

The great thing about a winter squash is that it’s low in fat, delivers an ample dose of your dietary fibre and provides significant amounts of potassium, perfect for growing bones and maintaining old bones too!

Why not try a butternut squash stew, replacing fatty red meats such as beef for a delicious and sweet alternative?

These easy-to-make and delicious winter foods are great to keep your family healthy and give them warm, comforting meals to look forward to after a long day facing the infamous British weather.

How To Keep Your Family Healthy This Winter

With winter just around the corner, I thought now would be the perfect time to share my top three family health tips. Here’s how you can fend of those winter bugs, blues and sniffles.

Create your own pharmacy!

When one of us gets sick, it’s only a matter of time before the whole house is coughing and sneezing. I’ve learnt from experience that a full medicine cabinet is vital during the winter. I’m not a fan of nipping out to the chemist when I’m ill – especially when there are sub-zero temperatures outside!

I’d recommend that you keep your house well stocked with painkillers, cough syrups, antihistamines and congestion tablets. Nipping those nasty germs in the bud early is a great way to remain healthy this winter.

If I’m honest, it can sometimes be a struggle to prepare balanced, nutritious meals every single night. I like to stay stocked up on these fish oil supplements from Pharma Nord to complement my diet.

Finding a good source of vitamin D in winter is also very difficult. Since I can’t rely on the sun to provide my daily dosage, I sometimes use Vitamin D supplements during the colder months. To maximise your intake, I’d also recommend incorporating oily fish like salmon and mackerel into your meals. The kids may turn their noses up at it, but it’s worth a try. Read my recipe and instructions on how to create your own salmon and gnocchi bake.

Keep the healthy diet rolling

I’ve always considered myself quite good when it comes to healthy eating, but I always slip up at Christmas. When it’s miserable outside and the rain is pelting against the windows, I’m sure we’re all guilty of turning to comfort food a little too often than we should.

Instead of a hot chocolate, why not go for a warm glass of milk? Dairy products are great for keeping bones strong and our immune systems in good condition.

Your five-a-day is just as important now as it was during the summer. Keep a food diary if you have to, so you can track your improvement day by day. Get creative and incorporate more vegetables into your meals. Carrots, parsnips, turnips and lentils make for a great winter soups.

The NHS has a great guide on how your family can improve their diet, if you’d like further advice.

Wrap up

Come hell or high water, your kids will still want to play outside – especially once it starts to snow. I don’t let them take one step out the house unless they’re suitably wrapped up.

Send your children to school with a thick coat, gloves, hat and scarf. They are usually made to take their breaks outside, so you’ll have the peace of mind that they are going to be warm.

This helpful guide I found on Wiki How has some great ideas on how to keep your children warm.

Food Safety Week - What's In Your Fridge?

Food Safety week runs from 10th-16th June this year and is a great way for the Food Standards Agency to raise awareness about food hygiene at home. I love to cook, as do the Mini Mes, so making sure we do it properly to prevent food poisoning is vital! I took the Kitchen Check test to see how much at risk we are and apparently I'm a 'Hygiene Machine' scoring over 25, which is ideal.

You can tweet a picture of the inside of your fridge to @foodgov for some tips from the experts on how to stock your fridge safely.

This is our fridge today, a little low in content as the food shop will be done tomorrow!...

I always knew to store meat products at the bottom of the fridge but these tips from the website may be useful to you:

Make sure your fridge is set below 5°C, using a fridge thermometer to check. This is to prevent harmful germs from growing and multiplying.
Don’t overfill your fridge. This allows air to circulate and maintains the set temperature.
Store raw meat and poultry at the bottom of the fridge and properly wrap or cover it to avoid raw juices contaminating other foods.

If you wish to teach the importance of food hygiene to your children in a fun way the Food Standards Agency website has some activities which you can print off for free for them to complete:

Child-proof Your Home: How to Make Your Space Safe

From the moment you brought baby home, you've had every gadget imaginable installed, every tiny space and easy to reach device locked and put away, and plugged up anything with a hole in it. You've spent many a night worrying about some minor safety detail while your child was an infant, however, now that they're a little older and you've been through the scares that accompany your child's exploration of the world you’re concern will change. Although you no longer have to fear for your children's safety like you did when they were babies, you must still be vigilant about keeping your ever-growing, ever-curious children safe at home.

Burns, slips and falls, and poisonings are only a few of the at-home risks your children face if you don’t properly child-proof your abode. According to The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA), every year more than 5,000 people in the UK die in accidents in the home and 2.7 million seek medical attention due to accidental injuries at home. Some safety hazards, such as a toy being left in the middle of the floor, are obvious, while others, like a loose railing on a stairway, aren't as easy to identify. Have home insurance from Aviva to help safe-guard your home against certain accidents, however, you must incorporate your own in-home safety routines and rules to ensure that your children are safe at home.

Burn Safety

500,000 under the age of 4 are injured in the home every year, and fire is the greatest cause of accidental death, with 46 percent of fatalities being the result of fire accidents. Younger children are most likely to sustain injuries from scald burns caused by hot liquids or steam, while older children are more commonly burned from flames caused by direct contact with fire.

  • Install and maintain smoke alarms in your home, on every floor, and near all rooms occupied by family members.
  • Remember to test your smoke alarms once a month to make sure they are working properly.
  • Devise a fire escape plan and practice this family fire escape route and specify a central meeting point for everyone.
  • Make sure there are at least two ways out of every room - don't block windows or doors.
  • Be cautious when you cook - never leave food on the stove unattended and supervise or restrict your children’s use of microwaves, stoves, and ovens.

Hazardous Chemicals Safety

While all parents know it isn't wise for your children to handle any hazardous chemicals and materials, children can still find a way to get their small hands on these dangerous products. Poisoning is the third leading cause of unintentional death throughout Europe, with 3,000 children 14 and under dying of acute poisoning each year.

  • Keep all dangerous chemicals , medicines, and toxic products, such cleaning agents, out of the reach of children and in places where they can’t see them as their curiosity may get the best of them and prompt them to investigate the product.
  • Don’t keep hazardous products around that you no longer use or need.
  • Always safely dispose of unused, unneeded, or expired prescription drugs and medicines, vitamins, and supplements.
  • Remember to properly read the labels, particularly those regarding dosage, and follow directions when giving medicines to children.
What tips do you have to keep your children safe at home?
