The Funny Things Kids Say and Do - The Mother's Day Edition

A few days before Mother's Day each year, the Mr will ask the Mini Mes what gift ideas they have in mind for me. Jamster often opts for some cute beauty essentials which are ALWAYS bright pink (he knows me well) whereas Minxy, with more expensive taste (just like me), usually selects jewellery.

This year however the Mr hadn't asked the children and instead he picked up a few items, while shopping himself for convenience, which were stored ever so secretly above the fridge in a transparent bag and in a drawer I often use!

Mother's Day weekend came around quickly and the Mini Mes went off to their dad's house as scheduled. I hadn't expected to see them again until the evening of Mothering Sunday but then I received a text from Minxy...

How To Be A DJ - According to Jamster

When Jamster grows up he wants to be a DJ. Just the other day he announced that driving an ice cream van and helping himself to soft whip, flakes and sauce was his career choice but I guess kids change their minds quite frequently! 

He came to me with a sheet of paper which read "Skill: To set a long term goal for myself" and I was curious to discover what his goal was. I wondered what path he hoped his life was heading along and it was all written down in front of me, even providing a few tips on how others could get a dream job relating to music too...

The Funny Things Kids Say And Do - School's Out For Summer

I'm always proud of the Mini Mes and their achievements, as I'm sure most parents are with their own children, but when I get their reports and read how well they are doing at school it always makes me grin ear to ear with pride. I said to them both how pleased I was after reading the latest edition and they requested a visit to the ice cream parlour as an end of year treat... which I happily agreed to (yum)!


Jamster always goes to school very cheerfully and he has lots of friends. I know he likes to giggle and talks a lot too the cheeky chappy. His teacher points out that he loves art because of the mess - spot on, he loves playing in mud and getting grubby at home in the garden.

Conversations with Kids

Sometimes the honesty from the mouth of a child can be completely hilarious whereas at other times it can result in you running for the hills with flushed cheeks in embarrassment. The Mini Mes have, as always, come out with a mixture of the two this week *cringe*. 

Thankfully nothing was said within close proximity to offend however! Phew...

When getting ready for school some mornings there is a lady that passes by the window with quite a long face.

Expressions - Funny Photos

The Mini Mes are fairly used to having their picture taken whether it's to remind us of a fantastic family day out, for work purposes or something completely different, so it's no surprise that more recently they have become obsessed with selfies. They will borrow my phone to take photographs of themselves, usually while pulling random faces and giggling, and I will discover them a few days later when going through my phone. They always make me chuckle.

Another thing they are currently obsessed with is Minecraft and I have the app on my iPad for them to play from time to time. Jamster had asked to play while I was doing Zumba the other day so he and Minxy wandered upstairs to keep themselves occupied while I exercised. Later that evening I

Roaring Rocky Road Recipe (Plus Outtakes) #Bahlsen Bake Off

Nothing beats a huge box of sweet treats arriving on your doorstep, so we were more than happy to accept a hamper from Bahlsen to enjoy. The idea was to create one of the recipes using the biscuits and books provided and to video it, so we had a browse at the recipes and because there were so many that appealed we just selected one by opening the book on a random page.
We ended up choosing Roaring Rocky Road filled with marshmallows and covered in chocolate!

Not only was it fun to make with the Mini Mes while filming, but we had some delicious food to indulge with at the end - a win win situation!

Family Funny - The Silly Selfie

We all know that searching for our symptoms on Google is never a good idea but after flying home from an amazing week in Kefalonia I knew that the pain and swelling in my legs could be a sign of DVT so I decided to visit my GP. Just to be on the safe side.

The only appointment available was 3.35pm so after a very quick dash to get the Mini Mes home from school we all headed to the doctor's surgery. The nurse was running on time, possibly for the first time ever, so the kids and I got called in almost straight away upon checking in. 

While the nurse checked my blood pressure, prodded my ankles and measured my calves I handed

Furbys, iPads and Pooh - Family Funny

Jamster is at the age where anything even slightly disgusting makes his eyes light up and sets him off in fits of laughter. He will pop up from anywhere at anytime shouting "pull my finger" but thankfully I've fallen for that once before to know I should avoid doing so again! 

He is obsessed with Horrid Henry and his gruesome tales and he likes to play practical jokes on his big sister, as little brothers do. He loves slime, Toxic magazine and generally just being a little crude but we certainly love him for it and it definitely makes us all laugh too at times.

He has been connecting his Furby to the iPad since he got it at Christmas and apart from feeding it and playing games with it, he has recently discovered that he can make it *ahem* visit the toilet.

He burst into my bedroom to share this revelation while I was putting some washing away...

Family Funny - The Protective Child

We are quite lucky that our ice cream man visits all year round with not only frozen treats but hot dogs, snacks and a variety of drinks. Whenever the music plays in our street, the Mini Mes eyes light up and if I've got some cash to hand I take them outside to select something.

I have a sweet tooth too (as if you didn't know) so I'm quite partial to his unique bubblegum flavour whip, and when my diet slips out of mind an ice cream often slips into my hand too!

Say Cheese!... and Cat Woman - Family Funny

If I had to choose between cheese and chocolate it would be a very close call. I probably eat far too much of both, and of food in general, and I love a good helping grated on top of most meals; cheese that is!

The Mini Mes often help with dinner, whether that's cooking it all by themselves while I supervise or just assisting with general bits and bobs, and while chopping some mature cheddar we began to discuss our favourite types of cheese.

Sibling Friendship - Family Funny

Most of half term was spent at home due to my back injury but this meant we enjoyed lots of baking, crafts, indoor den building and duvet days with movies -
I really don't mind that at all and we had lots of fun.

Magic Tricks... Busted!

When the Mini Mes return from their dad's house on a Sunday evening we snuggle up on the sofa, put a movie on and talk about their weekend. I miss them when they go there every fortnight, although I really appreciate the time alone with the Mr and the opportunity to catch up with friends, so it's nice to find out what they have been up to while I've not been with them.

When they came home on Sunday this week, unpacked their bags and made their way into the lounge, Jamster decided to put on Dynamo. We all love his illusions that leave us completely baffled and we soon began discussing magic...

Jamster: You know the trick when people pull a coin out of your ear?

Minxy and I: Yes.

Jamster: Well, I know how that's done.

Me: Oooh do you, how do they do it?

Jamster: Well, the magician has a tiny mouse which he gives the coin to, it carries it up the persons back and passes it to the magician when he touches your ear. 

Me: *Giggle* I'm not sure if that's quite how they do it but I do like your thinking!

Turtles Time

For Christmas we purchased Jamster the TMNT Secret Sewer Lair as he is obsessed with the pizza loving ninjas that are Leonardo, Raphael, Donatello and Michelangelo. It was definitely his favourite gift and it's lovely to hear him playing with his figures and putting on different voices for each.

While putting some washing away the other day I could hear him pretending to be Splinter; the turtles sensei.
Splinter asked all of the turtles to gather in the sewer for an important meeting.


Jamster as Splinter: "I've actually got a confession to make. 
      I'm really a mouse in disguise."


The seriousness in his voice had me sniggering!
Thankfully the turtles weren't too bothered by this revelation...


Jamster as Leonardo: "That's okay, can we go and destroy Shredder now?"

Moves Like Jagger

My little tween is often found hidden away in her room with arts and crafts spread across her desk and tunes blaring while she sings and stamps away like an elephant.  I thought a karaoke machine was the perfect present for her so I purchased one and popped it away for Christmas. 

After unwrapping her Blingles, Gelarti, a Kindle Fire and a few other bits and pieces she was thrilled to see the pink system complete with several discs of the latest pop songs to dance away to; it was the first thing she unpacked and set up!

She has called me upstairs several times to sing along to Britney and William followed by some Michael Jackson but she didn't want to get involved herself while I was present. The only time I was allowed to hear her was through her bedroom door.

I decided to try and catch her having a boogie but I was discovered every time. 

Well, that was until...

Compliments from Kids

Fast approaching my 30's I don't tend to receive that many compliments anymore, so the ones I do get generally leave me in denial or make me feel amazing for days!

The Mini Mes are little angels when it comes to making me feel special, it comes naturally to them, but I'm not quite sure they have completely grasped the concept of compliments just yet.


While heading out of the door for the morning school run...

Jamster: Ooo you smell lovely today mum.
Me: Aww thank you, that's very kind.
Jamster: That perfume you wore yesterday stunk.


When collecting the Mini Mes after school in my new winter footwear...

Minxy: Witwoo mum! 
Me: Thank you, do you like them?
Minxy: Those boots make you look really tall and skinny like a huge giant.

What Do Your Children REALLY Think About You?

A video popped up in my news feed the other day and it left me wondering what the Mini Mes really thought about me as a parent. Like the mums in the video I always focus on my negative points and the things I need to improve on, but I was pleasantly surprised by their responses when I asked them... even if they were quite random!

Jamster "You are kind, generous, epic and definitely not evil."

Minxy "Hmmm you are definitely chatty and loud! Intelligent, responsible. Sometimes you are a hard worker but sometimes not. You are expensive that's for sure."



Can you tell Jamster likes his Marvel movies? Epic and evil are his current favourite words and his teacher even pointed that out at parents evening!
I really love that they picked out some of my positive points. I do try to be kind and generous as much as possible and them mentioning that makes me feel appreciated.
I may have even gone a little bit mushy inside when they said that!

I do have quite a large mouth and I'm used to facial expressions featuring wide eyes, especially when I'm attempting to sing and dance at 7.30am before school. Oops.
I wouldn't say being talkative is a negative thing though really. I'm just friendly.

I'm happy with that.

Fairy Frolics

Minxy hadn't lost any teeth in quite a while so the moment she noticed one was a little wobbly at the weekend she decided to tug at it until she pulled it out, despite my best attempts to persuade her not to. Ouch!

I think she was a bit shocked once it was actually in her hand and she felt a little bit guilty for being impatient and not allowing nature to take its course.

Her note to the tooth fairy is proof of that...

She was rather apologetic and even provided a gift for the fairy!

The fairy didn't have any cash to hand, possibly due to the fact a tooth loss was quite unexpected, so she wrote a tiny letter back, left a new book (she raided Santa's stash hidden in my wardrobe, oops) and added some sequins and glitter to the pile. 

Minxy was very pleased that Felicity Fairy prefers the cello....
Funnily enough that is the instrument she plays too.

Make-Believe Magic

I'm fairly sure that Minxy is no longer a believer *sob*. She has doubted Santa for a few years but if it works in her favour she is happy to play along!

She is hoping Father Christmas brings her some rather pricey gifts...

...she gets more and more like me every day with her expensive taste.

I'm glad she has mentioned the return of the Elf on the Shelf, it reminds me that although my beautiful tween is growing up she still appreciates the build up to the big day and that she is still a little girl at heart.
I'm really looking forward to dusting him off for some festive fun.

I also liked the fact that she added a comment about her being good 'most of the time'.
She is unbelievably honest!

Apparently she is only ever naughty if someone has irritated her though. Hmmm.

Guy Fawkes and X-Ray Glasses

We had planned to go to the local bonfire and fireworks display at the weekend but as the weather was horrendous we decided to stay at home in the warm instead. We started discussing where bonfire night originated from when Minxy piped up...

"It was just that bloke with gun powder"

On the odd occasion when I may need a quick hand with something I'll ask the Mini Mes for assistance - It's only usually something small like some washing being taken upstairs, or a fresh tea towel being fetched.
I had a few Halloween items I wanted putting on the landing ready to go back into the attic so I called out to the kids who were watching a movie.

Me: Can someone do me a favour please?
Minxy: Are you going to pay me?

If only I was paid for every chore I did!

Minxy and Jamster are big fans of secret agent and spy films (especially Johnny English) so they can often be found wearing hoodies and wandering around with badges and walkie talkies in hand!
Minxy appeared in the lounge the other morning with sun glasses on...

Me: Those aren't X-Ray glasses are they? *pretend to cover myself*
Minxy: Ewwww no, that would just be nasty to see you in your bra!

Not everyone would agree I'll have you know!

I'm always summoned when busy, I swear they wait until I'm sat relaxing or in the middle of cooking before making a request, isn't that always the way? While slicing chicken for dinner Minxy approached me...

Minxy: Can I have a hug?
Me: In just a sec Minxy, I'll finish doing this and then I'll be with you. Have a hug with Jamster for a min.
Minxy: I would rather lick a toilet!
